ABOUT US
Hello, I am Barbara-Ann Ewer, welcome to our site! Forty years ago my husband Larry and I started Bar-Lar Shih Tzu.
Through the years we have bred and owned 50+ champions. Our dogs have been shown in the USA and abroad.
We are dedicated to producing the very best quality Shih Tzu possible. Occasionally have pet puppies available to approved homes. Our puppies are sold with a spay/neuter contract on and AKC limited registration.
We do not sell dogs for breeding purposes. We are happy to share information about the breed and their care.
Below we give you a look into our dog room as well as information on our daily routine.

Our Dog Room and Play Area
Puppy Play Pens
These puppy pens are specifically designed for keeping Moms and babies as well as weaned babies safe and sanitary while they are growing. Similar to a crib or play open for children only made to be indestructible for puppies. They are 4 ft x 4 ft square and on wheels bases so they can be moved for cleaning under.

Stack Pens
The taller pens are called stack units. They are designed to allow individual sleeping rooms for each dog. The dogs can be close but they have their own space. This is beneficial because it allows us to keep a close eye on food and water consumption. Some dogs require different nutritional needs due to age, pregnancy etc. All dogs like their own space and we have found that with this method they have a friend next to them but they can also have time to rest quietly with their own bed and toys. This is their night time sleeping quarters. During the day they are out on the floor in the dog room, house or outside.

Our Routine and Play Area
Our day starts at 6 am when all the dogs go out on the deck to do their business and to play. While they are outside, pens must be wiped down with a bleach solution and water bottles filled as well as feeding bowls filled and passed out. Babies have to be fed, given fresh clean bedding and new wee wee pads. They stay out about an hour and then everyone is brought back in for breakfast. While they are eating, papers are changed in pens and kennel laundry is started.
Time for a much needed coffee break!
At 11 am everyone goes back outside to play on the deck. Older puppies go out to play with the adult dogs for great socialization. During this time is when I do my cleaning and grooming. Anything that needs to be done for that given day. If the weather is cold or wet then everyone plays inside.
They take a nap from 2-4 pm and then back out again.
They love this time to play together and run and exercise.
We repeat the same chores at night, with changing pen pads, water bottles, messy bedding etc.
We leave the TV or radio on for soothing noise as they rest.
